Overview

Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain on the African continent and the second highest in Tanzania and dominates the Arusha National Park with its huge cliffs. The mountain is often used as warm-up hiking in preparation for the Kilimanjaro. However, the technical requirements are greater on Mount Meru than on the Kilimanjaro Routes. The summit of Mt. Meru (4,566 m), with its magical cliffs, awaits you on this varied and challenging trekking tour.

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

Upon arrival at the airport (Kilimanjaro International airport or Arusha) you will be met by your personal driver guide and drive you to your accommodation in Arusha for dinner and an overnight stay waiting for your adventures to start on the following day.

Day 2 : Arusha to Miriakamba Hut (2514 m) - 4 to 6 hours hike)

Early morning departure to Momella Gate of Arusha National Park (1,500 m). After the formalities for entering the park, we begin our hike, led by a park ranger, who will accompany us for our safety. The route runs through open grasslands and offers the chance to see buffalo, warthogs and other wildlife. The path continues as a steady ascent through a dense tropical mountain forest. We have lunch near a giant fig tree arch. Our hike continues through less dense forests, in which there are many birds and black and white colobus monkeys. In the late afternoon, weather permitting, we can see towering cliffs and the Ash Cone. We reach the Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m), which lies on an idyllic grass clearing, in time to enjoy the last rays of the afternoon sun and a wonderful view over the surrounding plains towards Kilimanjaro.

Day 3 : Miriakamba Hut (2514 m) to Saddle Hut (3570 m) - 4 to 5 hours hike

The walk from Miriakamba Hut to the Saddle below Little Meru is a short day but a steep and sustained climb all the way. We walk through attractive, open and lush montane forest to reach the half way point of Elephant Ridge. This has excellent views of the summit ridge across most of the crater floor. Whilst resting, vegetation you might spot elephants or other animals from here. The path continues uphill through giant heather and other moorland vegetation to reach Saddle Hut (3,570m), where lunch is waiting for us. The afternoon is free to rest and enjoy the views. The more energetic can make a short climb nearby summit of Little Meru (3,820m) for superb views just before sunset.[3 -5 hours walking]. Overnight at Saddle Hut of Full board basis

Day 4: Saddle Hut (3570 m) - ascent to Socialist Peak (4566 m) - return Miriakamba Hut (2514 m) - 12 hrs

We start early at around 2 a.m. and climb steeply to Rhino Point (3,800 m). From here the path becomes demanding and requires full concentration and sure-footedness. At sunrise we reach an undulating ridge of ash and rocks and we reach Cobra Point (4,350 m). The view is breathtaking: the cliffs of the crater rim, the ash cone protruding from the crater floor, Mount Kilimanjaro, which seems to float on the morning clouds, and when the weather is clear you can see to the west as far as the Rift Valley. The summit of ‘Socialist Peak’ (4,566 m) is an hour further on a good but steep path that can be slippery at times. After a couple of beautiful summit photos, we descend back to Saddle-Hut. The way to Rhino Point in the morning light on a narrow ridge will have a different charm than on the way there. After a hearty breakfast we climb back to the Miriakamba Hut.

Day 5:Miriakamba Hut (2514 m) - Hotel in Arusha - approx 3 hrs hike

We take the direct route through open grassland and mixed forest with a good chance of spotting wild animals. This trail offers excellent views back to the crater and across the plains of the national park. We should get to Momella Gate in the late morning. At the gate we will say goodbye to our great crew and will be driven back to our hotel in Arusha. Enjoy a long overdue hot shower, dinner, and some partying!.

Day 6 : Onwards Travel to the next destination

Early morning after breakfast and further relaxation at the hotel, we drive straight to the airport in time of your flight to your next destination.
