Day 1 - Nale Moru Gate to Simba Camp

3-4 hours
8km
2650m

Begin your northern approach to Kilimanjaro at Nale Moru Gate (1,950m). This quieter route starts through farmland and pine forest, offering a different perspective from the southern routes. The gentle first day (3-4 hours) helps you ease into the trek. Simba Camp (2,650m) sits in a beautiful location with views of the Kenyan plains. The northern side of the mountain is less traveled, providing a more intimate climbing experience with excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.

Day 2 - Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp

4-5 hours
6km
3600m

Continue ascending through the moorland zone with its unique vegetation. The trail offers increasingly spectacular views of the mountain's northern slopes. The Rongai Route is known for its steady, gradual ascent which helps with acclimatization. Kikelewa Camp (3,600m) provides a peaceful setting away from the busier southern routes. The higher altitude means cooler nights - ensure you have proper sleeping gear. This day helps your body continue adapting to the increasing altitude.

Day 3 - Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

3-4 hours
4km
4330m

A shorter day brings you to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m), one of Kilimanjaro's most spectacular campsites. The camp sits at the base of Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro's second-highest cone, offering dramatic views. The tarn (mountain lake) reflects the peak beautifully. This high-altitude camp is crucial for acclimatization before joining the main summit route. The afternoon and evening here help your body prepare for the final push. Rest well and hydrate - you're getting close to summit territory.

Day 4 - Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

5-6 hours
9km
4703m

Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a vast high-altitude desert. The terrain is relatively flat but the altitude makes it challenging. This crossing takes 5-6 hours and brings you to Kibo Hut (4,703m), your base for the summit attempt. The landscape is stark and lunar-like, with minimal vegetation. Arrive early afternoon to maximize rest before your midnight departure. Your guides will provide a comprehensive summit briefing. Early dinner and rest are essential.

Summit night begins around midnight. The ascent to Gilman's Point (5,681m) is steep and challenging, following a zigzag path up the crater wall. Reach the crater rim at sunrise for spectacular views. Continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - Africa's highest point! Celebrate your achievement, then descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest. Continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for the night. The descent is long but the lower altitude provides welcome relief.

Day 6 - Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

6-7 hours
20km

Your final descent follows the Marangu Route down through the rainforest. The thick, oxygen-rich air feels wonderful after days at altitude. Enjoy the lush vegetation and reflect on your incredible achievement. Reach Marangu Gate (1,860m) where you'll receive your summit certificate. This is the only route that uses the same path up and down, so you'll see other climbers at various stages. Celebrate with your team and transfer to your hotel for well-deserved rest.
